About last night
I arrived at Great Jones Café five minutes early. I walked in, looked around and didn't see Captain Jersey. The bar was full so I sat down on the bench outside and waited.
And waited. And waited. At 8:20, my cell phone rang.
"Are we at different places?" he asked.
"Why? Where are you?"
"Acme."
I started walking.
"This place is packed. I'll come to you."
We chatted as I walked, and laughed about the mix-up. When I arrived, he was waiting outside. We said an awkward hello and then debated whether we wanted to eat or drink. We decided to drink first, and then eat when we got hungry.
We sat at the bar and discussed a wide range of topics -- Craig's List obsessions, horror films, heavy metal, our last relationships which ended in an eerily similar fashion, freelance writing projects, starting relationships with family members late in the game, Britney Spears, dot-coms we both worked at. Turns out he worked at the company that just (fired my ass) laid me off due to restructuring in 2000. To hear him talk about his experience, the company didn't change all that much in five years.
Too much fried food and too many beers later, we called it a night. We walked outside.
"Are you okay to drive?" I asked.
"Yes, definitely."
"Where are you parked?"
"Over there."
"I'll walk you to your car. It's on my way."
Then he said something that's guaranteed to get a Manhattan girl hot.
"Why don't I give you a ride home?"
The worst parking spot in the world, so named because while it may be right in front of my building, it's directly underneath the streetlight where all of the pigeons congregate, was available, so he pulled over and we awkwardly chatted. We agreed that it had been a great time and we should do it again.
(In fact, I had mentioned that I would totally see The Devil's Rejects again in the theater, and I just received an email inviting me to do so with him upon my return from my obnoxious Hamptons vacation. Yee haw!)
All in all, a fantastic time was had. I'm not entirely sure that "spark" is there, but it usually takes me awhile to figure that out. I hope it is, because I've never dated anyone I actually have anything in common with and it would be fun to try out, methinks.
