The Gold Sandal Project

I have a bad habit of buying things I almost like, with the intention of getting my craft on and turning it into something I love. Case in point – my gold sandals from dELiAs.

Now, the sandals themselves are very cute. The crabs adorning them? Not so much. I figured, no big deal! I'll take the crabs off! Except that when I ripped off the crabs, a great mess was left behind by the glue. Not pretty.

Idea #1: Gold paint! Or gold ribbon! When I get ideas like this in my head, the plan must be implemented immediately. At 8:00pm on a Friday night, however, my intra-neighborhood options were limited. I went to two Duane Reades, where I found neither paint nor ribbon and then Rite Aid, where I found a gold pen. "No problem," I thought to myself. "I'll just draw over the mess."

That whole drawing over the mess thing? Yeah, that didn't work.

Idea #2: See what's in my little goodie bag of craft supplies! I decided against felt, lace and finally settled on shiny black ribbon. Because black and gold looks nice together! I made multiple little loops with the black ribbon, and fashioned two adorable nearly-identical rosettes, which I then glued where the crabs had been.

Cute! Well, cute until I realized they didn't look good with anything I had in my closet, that is. I needed another idea.

Idea #3: Go to Hallmark on my lunch hour and see what I could find. What I found was tissue paper in the exact same shade of gold as my sandals. Score! Last night, I got to work gluing. Two sheets covered the lumps, and so far, it seems promising. I need to do some trimming, but I think The Gold Sandal Project has been mostly successful. However, I have made a vow to either 1) Make things myself from now on or 2) Buy things that don't need to be messed with. Except, you know, for the tank tops I want to embroider. And the skirts I want to put felt appliqués on. And you know... oh fuck it. This is who I am.
